As the Counselor-in-Training instructor individual will provide campers with the training, skills, and knowledge to be a counselor in the future.  As a Unit Leader, helps campers understand and live up to the Girl Scout Promise and Law; develops and uses a democratic form of government; plans, carries out and evaluates activities; and ensures physical and emotional well-being of campers.



  • Facilitates activities to teach Counselor-In-Training and Junior Counselor Intern campers interpersonal skills, teaching techniques, leadership skills, self-confidence, outdoor living skills, and child development, in the context of a camp setting.
  • Leads activities/experiences with the group through use of camp government, girl-leader planning, and the Girl Scout Program.
  • Assists the CIT campers, in conjunction with other staff, to coordinate the evening activities, special meals, and theme days enjoyed by all campers. 
  • Instructs CIT campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills, evacuation, etc.
  • Informs Camp Director of camper or staff problems.
  • Evaluates each camper’s progress throughout the program.
  • Learns the likes/dislikes of each CIT camper.
  • Guides activities and experiences in the unit through use of camp government, by girls/for girls planning, and the Girl Scout Program.  Assists in guiding unit, group and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities.  Coordinates unit activities with those of the entire camp.
  • Greets campers/parents on first day of camp; sets positive, nurturing tone; answers parent’s questions.  Maintains communication with parents throughout week about camper issues/concerns, if necessary.  During check-out, meets briefly with parents about their camper’s week.
  • Prepares unit for new campers by ensuring removal of personal items or trash left by previous session.
  • During staff training, teaches each staff member in the unit her responsibilities.
  • Enforces camp safety regulations; instructs campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills, evacuations, etc.
  • Ensures the welfare of each individual in the unit and does all possible to solve problems; informs the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director of any camper or staff issues/concerns.
  • Helps ensure morale of staff by monitoring that unit staff gets enough rest, time off, and recreational opportunities.
  • Formally evaluates staff at least twice a season, conducts other evaluations as necessary.
  • Sets good example for campers/others including cleanliness, punctuality, clean-up/chores, sportsmanship, and table manners.
  • Recognizes and responds to opportunities for problem-solving in the group.
  • Helps each camper meet the goals established by the camp for camper development.
  • Assists in supervising all assigned aspects of the campers’ day including morning reveille, kapers, meal times, rest hour, evening activities, getting ready for bed, and after-hours duty as assigned.
  • Evaluates current season and makes suggestions for following seasons.
  • Prepares for and actively participates in staff training.
  • Encourages respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Assists with opening and closing camp, making inventories and reports.
  • Assists with unit housekeeping, sanitation, and care of supplies and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
This is a full-time summer position and meals and lodging are included.

Job Requirements


  • Acceptance of and adherence to the purpose and principles of Girl Scouting as embodied in the Promise, Law and program goals. Willingness to become a registered member of the organization.
  • Twenty-one years of age or older.
  • ·         Valid driver’s license, car and a clean driving record
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifcation
  • Previous youth camp staff experience or similar youth program/leadership training experience
  • Ability and experience in supervising and teaching staff and campers in the outdoors
  • Ability to organize and plan daily schedule of program area
  • Ability and willingness to handle rough and uneven terrain and the day-to-day rigor of camp life
  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers and staff
