Day Camp Lifeguard

Summary: The day camp lifeguard develops and leads water based programs for campers. 

 Reports to:    Camp Director         


    1. Assists in inspecting equipment, and making repairs to aquatics equipment. 
    2. Assists in conducting initial and end-of-season inventory, and storing and keeping equipment in good condition. 
    3. Fosters camper aquatic skills in relation to ocean or lake swimming.  
    4. Learns the likes/dislikes of each camper. 
    5. Recognizes and responds to opportunities for problem-solving in the group. 
    6. Helps each camper meet the goals established by the camp for camper development. 
    7. Assists in supervising all assigned aspects of the campers’ day, including morning check in, kapers, meal times, rest hour, activities, pack up and departure.  
    8. Instructs campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills. 
    9. Prepares for and actively participates in staff training and meetings. 
    10. Sets a good example for campers and others, including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean-up and chores, sportsmanship, and table manners. 
    11. Encourages respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities. 
    12. Other duties as assigned.

Location Notes:Camps are located in varying locations around the state. Camp staff moves from location to location to deliver program. Looking for candidates from all areas of the state of Maine.
Job Requirements


  • Must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguard with Waterfront Mod, hold a valid certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer (Girl Scouts of Maine will provide certification training to eligible candidate). 

  • Prefer candidates be 21 years of age plus but will consider 18+ based on experience.   
  • Acceptance of and adherence to the purpose and principles of Girl Scouting as embodied in the promise, law, and program goals
  • Willingness to become a registered member of the organization
  • Training and experience in waterfront activities 
  • Previous youth camp staff experience or similar youth program experience 
  • Ability to maintain equipment in excellent working condition 
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance, and teach an activity 
  • Good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control 
  • Ability and willingness to handle rough and uneven terrain and the day-to-day rigor of camp life
  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers and staff


Generous weekly salary
Camp operates (Monday-Friday) 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.  Staff training provided and required.
