SUMMER CAMP TEACHER

The Midcoast Humane, located in Brunswick, ME, is looking for an energetic and creative teacher for its summer program, Animal Camp. At Animal Camp, children will learn about responsible pet care and animal welfare issues, while becoming animal ambassadors through games, lessons, activities, presentations by guest speakers, and hands-on time spent with animals. The main goal of Animal Camp is to teach children kindness, compassion and respect for animals and each other through experience-based learning.
The Animal Camp teacher will develop and construct a curriculum in which children will learn, succeed and have fun. The camp will consist of six sessions of week-long day programs for kids in grades 1-6. Specific teacher responsibilities will include adapting curricula for different age groups, planning day-to-day activities for campers, overseeing group lessons and activities, supervising and mentoring children, caring for and handling a variety of animals, supervising teacher assistants and volunteers, and assisting with the management of the camp.
The contract term will be negotiated based on camp weeks and time for preparation in advance of the first camp session. The camp will run from July 8th to August 16th. The teacher will be expected to begin work prior to July 8th in order to learn about the shelter, develop the curriculum, and make preparations for the campers. While camp is in session, the position will be full-time, from 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM.
Experience as a teacher or camp counselor required
Experience in designing and adapting curricula for different age groups preferred
Extensive experience with animals and animal handling, either personal or work-related
Experience working with children required

Understanding of dog and/or cat behavior and positive reinforcement training, as well as a good foundation in animal husbandry, grooming, basic needs and sheltering, and advocacy is a plus
Fingerprinting and a background check are required and are paid for by MH prior to employment. Child First Aid and CPR certification are required prior to the beginning of camp. Due to the short-term nature of this position, MH is not able to provide any time off from the work schedule. This is a paid position for an independent contractor with no benefits.
