Part-Time - Assistant Harbor Master
The Town of Wells, known as one of Maine’s premiere coastal communities with a seasonal population of approximately 40,000, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Harbor Master.
Under the direction of the Harbor Master, the Assistant Harbor Master provides assistance with the day-to-day operations of the harbor and is responsible for varied administrative and maintenance work and provides assistance to boaters and the general public when requested. Incumbent will work to ensure compliance with the Town’s waterway laws, bylaws and regulations by patrolling shorelines and waterways and by issuing citations and warnings for violations when applicable.
Education and Experience
High School degree with additional specialized training in seamanship and navigation; two years of progressively responsible experience with boating and waterway operations;
Certified (or ability to obtain certification) in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Must have a valid Maine State driver’s license
Experience in small boat handling and navigation
Knowledge of Marlinspike Seamanship
Familiarity with nautical terms, and best practices
Familiarity with marine rigging and mooring tackle
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Comprehensive knowledge of marina operations, boat handling, and rescue techniques
Knowledge of state and local laws
Familiarity with Marine construction including docks, bulkheads, ramps, etc.
Ability to work with the general public and local, state and federal agencies
Ability to respond quickly to emergencies in a calm and efficient manner
Record keeping skills.
Good word processing skills.
Navigation skills and the ability to use GPS, radar, compass and radio communication equipment
Frequent physical effort required when performing duties. May be required to lift, move, and/or push objects which weigh sixty pounds or more as well as climb, stoop, crawl, and kneel for extended periods of time. Frequently required to work outside during inclement weather conditions and must have the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships.
