We are currently accepting applications for full-time entry-level and/or lateral police officers.
Our Police Officers perform the functions of law enforcement necessary to maintain community interaction, public peace, protect life and property, prevent crime, apprehend violators of the law and otherwise assure proper enforcement of the laws and ordinances of the City of Augusta and the State of Maine. They contribute to the apprehension of criminal suspects by conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations.
Probationary officers are frequently challenged to perform basic job tasks under varying degrees of pressure. They may be required to safely operate a motor vehicle under emergency conditions, communicate clearly with diverse groups of people, plan the most efficient routes of travel, assess possible threats, consider the need for additional resources and make the appropriate requests in a timely manner, develop a response strategy en route while considering officer safety strategies, and adapt immediately to changing conditions or updated information. Police Officers must have the ability to make decisions quickly, using sound judgment, without lengthy deliberation or consultation with others. They must be able to multi-task effectively to complete the probationary period and consistently perform the job functions of a competent, fully trained police officer.
At least (21) years of age, possess sound, moral character, able to read, write, speak English fluently, valid Maine driver’s license that meets insurability standards, no criminal convictions for or uncharged conduct involving: murder, any Class A, B, C, or D crime. In addition, ability to learn State, Federal, and Municipal laws, criminal procedures and their applications, conduct crime scene investigations and interview witnesses. Have taken and passed the alert test given by Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Successfully have completed service school from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy or the fulltime officer basic Police School at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Meet all entrance requirements and standards for acceptance into the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Basic Police School and/or licensing requirements for a police officer within the State of Maine as described in the rules of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy set forth by the Board of Trustees, as outlined in Appendix 2 of this Standard Operating Procedure.
Successful candidates must successfully complete a Physical Agility Test, Oral Board Recommendation, Background Investigation, and Psychological Examination, Chief of Police interview, Polygraph examination, physical examination and City Manager interview. Wages: $18.33 to $24.67 (with 7.5% increase on Sept. 1, 2018)
High school diploma or GED, must have passed the MCJA Alert test. Preference will be given to applicants with a minimum of an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or related field, and who have graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Additonal pay stipends available for education attainment.
