Primary Purpose of Position:  The Public Information and Social Media Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive media strategy for MaineHousing to include both traditional and social media.  The position will enhance the MaineHousing brand by communicating information on MaineHousing’s priorities and activities to staff, partners, and the public and will build strong online communities through our various social media platforms.

Education /Experience:  Education in public relations, journalism, marketing, or related field and five years of experience or a combination of education, training, and experience preferred.

Core Functions:

  • Communication Priorities
    • Coordinate with MaineHousing management to identify communication priorities
    • Develop and maintain talking points with key messages for current issues
    • Identify events and opportunities for MaineHousing to deliver key messages
    • Write and edit speeches and documents
  • Foster Media Relations
    • Cultivate and maintain productive working relationships with members of the press and editorial boards
    • Become the trusted “go to” for the media for background on affordable housing questions
    • Respond to media information requests and serve as a spokesperson on routine issues
    • Recommend and produce letters to the editor, op ed pieces, press releases, and media events as needed to communicate priority messages
    • Prepare talking points for management on high profile issues
    • Monitor traditional and online media with content relevant to MaineHousing
    • Prepare and share relevant news items with staff and Board of Commissioners
    • Identify and pursue media opportunities
  • Grow MaineHousing’s Social Presence and Digital Marketing Initiatives
    • Prepare monthly e-newsletter on MaineHousing activities and issues of interest
    • Coordinate highlights and other content for MaineHousing’s website and social media outlets
    • Work with marketing consultants to develop social media campaigns to achieve program marketing goals
    • Monitor social media accounts and offer constructive interaction with users
    • Oversee data-driven day-to-day execution of social media messaging and grow “followers” and interactions
    • Identify and leverage social media trends and forecasts; identify opportunities for innovation and collaboration
  • Coordinate Public Information and Marketing Initiatives
    • Work with department directors to identify program related information and marketing objectives and develop an action plan for accomplishing them
    • Design and edit information and marketing materials for MaineHousing and Department outreach efforts
    • Develop and maintain productive relationships with department staff to stay on top of MaineHousing activities, opportunities, challenges, and accomplishments
    • Write and edit copy for various MaineHousing publications, including the annual report and reports to the legislature
    • Write and edit copy for MaineHousing website, brochures, flyers, ads, and other marketing materials
    • Work with staff to develop and maintain a robust set of client and partner testimonials, including quotes, photos and/or video clips, and permission forms
  • Other duties as assigned
    Skills and Knowledge: 
  • Excellent communication skills – oral, written, listening
    • Proven ability to write clearly and concisely and to edit text
    • Experience communicating effectively in front of groups
  • Strong project management, time management, and organizations skills
  • Experience with marketing and advertising initiatives
  • Strong PC skills using various software
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office
    • Working knowledge of InDesign and Adobe products
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with staff, stakeholders, and media outlets
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and utilize creative and analytical skills to resolve issues
